Merle Hapes Bio
Merle Hapes was an American professional football player who gained recognition during the 1940s. Born on October 11, 1919, in Sherrill, Arkansas, Hapes rose to fame as a talented running back and halfback. He showcased his exceptional skills on the football field, primarily playing for the New York Giants in the National Football League (NFL). Hapes' contributions to the sport during his career helped solidify his place in football history and establish him as a notable figure in American athletics.
Hapes began his football journey at Springdale High School in Arkansas, where he showcased his promising talent. He then attended the University of Arkansas, where his skills flourished even further. While at Arkansas, Hapes played both ways as a running back and defensive back, exhibiting his versatility and adaptability on the field. His exceptional performance in college earned him several accolades, including being named as an All-American and leading the Razorbacks to the 1942 Cotton Bowl victory.
After completing his college career, Hapes was drafted by the New York Giants in the first round of the 1942 NFL Draft. He made an immediate impact in his rookie season, proving his worth as an elite football player. Hapes' career took an unfortunate turn in 1946 when he, along with teammate Frank Filchock, was banned from the NFL for his involvement in a gambling scandal. Although the ban was eventually lifted in 1948, Hapes' professional football career was significantly impacted. Despite the setback, he continued to play in minor leagues and professional football circuits until retiring from the sport in 1953. Merle Hapes' history, both on and off the field, leaves a lasting legacy in American football, making him a recognizable figure in the sport's history.
