He was the eldest son of Virginia Halas McCaskey, the principal owner of the Chicago Bears, making him a third-generation member of the iconic Halas-McCaskey family. Throughout his life, McCaskey proved himself to be an exceptional leader and an ardent advocate for the sport.
Upon graduating from Yale University with a degree in history in 1965, McCaskey enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he served as a captain. After his military service, McCaskey joined the Bears organization in 1978, assuming various executive roles and ultimately becoming the team's chairman in 1983, following the passing of his father, Ed McCaskey. Under his leadership, the Bears experienced both triumphs and challenges, but McCaskey remained steadfast in his commitment to the team's success and the preservation of its rich heritage.
Throughout his tenure, McCaskey made several noteworthy decisions that shaped the Bears' fortunes. In 1982, he appointed head coach Mike Ditka, who would go on to lead the team to its first Super Bowl victory in the 1985 season. Recognizing the need for a state-of-the-art home for the Bears, McCaskey played a pivotal role in the construction of the team’s new stadium, Soldier Field, which opened in 2003. He also oversaw significant changes to the organization's management structure and sought to modernize the team’s operations.
