Orlando Thomas

Orlando Thomas Bio

Orlando Thomas, born on October 21, 1972, was an American football player who made a name for himself in the National Football League (NFL). Hailing from Crowley, Louisiana, Thomas grew up with a passion for football and showcased immense talent from an early age. His notable skills eventually led him to a successful career as a defensive back for the Minnesota Vikings. With his exceptional playmaking abilities and strong defensive instincts, Thomas quickly became one of the most respected and revered athletes in the sport. Thomas attended Crowley High School, where he first displayed his immense talent on the football field. As a standout athlete, he earned numerous accolades and caught the attention of college recruiters. Orlando then went on to pursue his education at the University of Southwest Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette), where he played college football from 1990 to 1994. His exceptional performances on the field earned him multiple All-Southland Conference selections, solidifying his reputation as an up-and-coming player to watch in the NFL. In the 1995 NFL Draft, Thomas was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the second round, 42nd overall. He quickly made an impact as a safety for the team, showcasing remarkable ball-hawking skills and impressive speed on the field. Known for his hard-hitting tackles and ability to read and disrupt opposing offenses, Thomas became an integral part of the Vikings' defensive unit. Over his seven-year career in the NFL, all of which were spent with Minnesota, Thomas recorded 22 interceptions, seven fumble recoveries, and played in 98 regular-season games. Sadly, Orlando Thomas' career came to an untimely end in 2001 when he was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Despite the devastating diagnosis, Thomas continued to inspire those around him by raising awareness about the disease and advocating for research and support for ALS patients. He passed away on November 9, 2014, at the age of 42, leaving behind a lasting legacy not only in the football world but also as an advocate for ALS awareness.
