He attended the University of Texas, where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1974 and later obtained his law degree from the same institution in 1978. Soon after, Geren embarked on his journey as a public servant, beginning with his election to the Texas House of Representatives in 1983, representing the 91st district.
Geren's most notable political achievement came in 1997 when he was elected as a member of the United States Congress, representing Texas's 12th congressional district. During his tenure in the House of Representatives, Geren was known for his dedication to bipartisanship and his commitment to championing policies that benefitted the American people. He displayed a keen interest in national security matters and became a trusted voice on defense issues, a testament to his appointment to critical committees such as the House Armed Services Committee.
Following his distinguished career in Congress, Geren took up key positions within the U.S. Department of Defense. From 2001 to 2003, he served as the Special Assistant to the Secretary of Defense, undertaking responsibilities related to legislative affairs and intergovernmental affairs. He subsequently served as Acting Secretary of the Army from 2007 to 2009.
