Pokey Allen

Pokey Allen Bio

Pokey Allen, born Francis Vernon Allen Jr. on July 6, 1949, was an American football coach and former player. Known for his expertise in coaching defense, Allen made a significant impact on the sports industry during his career. Although primarily recognized for his contributions to the world of football, Allen's life and accomplishments extend far beyond the game.

Born and raised in Georgia, Allen displayed a passion for football from a young age. After high school, he attended Savannah State College, where he played as a linebacker for the Tigers. This experience not only honed his skills as a player but also sparked his interest in coaching. Following his graduation, Allen pursued a career in coaching, serving as an assistant coach at various colleges, including Oregon State University and the University of Oregon.

In 1991, Allen's career reached new heights when he was appointed as the head coach for the Portland State Vikings, an NCAA Division II football team. Under his guidance, the Vikings achieved remarkable success, winning back-to-back Division II national championships in 1992 and 1993. Allen's coaching style, characterized by his emphasis on discipline and attention to detail, allowed the team to excel both on and off the field.

Tragically, Allen's coaching career was cut short when he was diagnosed with cancer in the late 1990s. Despite his illness, he continued to display incredible resilience and determination. Even as his health declined, Allen remained an inspiration to his players and colleagues, teaching valuable life lessons about resilience, teamwork, and the importance of pursuing one's passion.

Pokey Allen's impact on the sports world cannot be understated. His coaching philosophy and dedication to his craft left an indelible mark on those who had the privilege of working with him. Although his life was cut short at the age of 52 on December 30, 2000, Allen's legacy lives on through the countless individuals he inspired and the timeless lessons he imparted both on and off the field.
