Randy Lerner is an American businessman and former owner of the Cleveland Browns, an American professional football team. Born on February 21, 1962, in Brooklyn, New York, Lerner is the son of billionaire Al Lerner, who made his fortune in the credit and financial services industry. Randy Lerner stepped into the limelight following his father's death in 2002 when he inherited his father's business empire and became the owner of the Browns.
Lerner attended Columbia University in New York City, where he obtained his bachelor's degree. Following his graduation, he pursued a Juris Doctor degree from Columbia Law School. After completing his education, Lerner initially worked as a lawyer before joining his father's financial services company, MBNA America. He quickly climbed the corporate ladder, serving as a vice president and director of the company.
While Lerner initially focused on his father's business empire, his true passion lay in sports. In 1998, he became the vice-chairman of the newly formed Cleveland Browns football team. Four years later, Lerner took over as the owner of the franchise after the passing of his father. Under his ownership, Lerner sought to revive the Browns' glory days, investing heavily in the team and its facilities. However, the team struggled to achieve sustained success on the field, leading Lerner to sell the franchise in 2012.
In addition to his ownership of the Cleveland Browns, Randy Lerner has been involved in other sports ventures. He briefly owned the English Premier League football club Aston Villa from 2006 to 2016. During his ownership tenure, Lerner invested significantly in the team and its infrastructure, but the club faced relegation from the Premier League in 2016.
