Rollie Miles

Rollie Miles Bio

Rollie Miles, also known as Roland Miles Jr., was a prominent American athlete who made significant contributions to the world of football. Born on September 15, 1927, in Kingston, Louisiana, Miles rose to fame while playing in the Canadian Football League (CFL) for the Edmonton Eskimos. Renowned for his exceptional skills as a running back and kick returner, he became a football legend in Canada and left an indelible mark on the sport. Miles' football career began at the University of Nevada, where he showcased his remarkable talents on the gridiron. After his collegiate success, he was drafted by the New York Giants in the 1948 NFL Draft. However, instead of pursuing a career in the National Football League (NFL), Miles decided to join the Edmonton Eskimos in the CFL. This move proved to be a game-changer as he quickly became one of the league's most electrifying players. During his time with the Edmonton Eskimos from 1951 to 1960, Miles gained widespread recognition for his incredible speed, agility, and versatility. His ability to navigate through defenses with apparent ease made him a nightmare for opposing teams. Miles consistently led the league in rushing and was the Canadian Football League's most outstanding player twice, in 1955 and 1957. He notably helped the Eskimos capture five Grey Cup championships, solidifying his position as one of the league's all-time greats. Beyond his remarkable performances on the field, Rollie Miles was also a trailblazer for racial equality, having faced discrimination as a Black athlete during a time of segregation. He broke down barriers and inspired others through his exceptional play, opening doors for future generations of athletes. Tragically, his career was cut short in 1960 following a severe knee injury, resulting in his retirement from professional football at the age of 33. Rollie Miles will always be remembered as a legendary figure in Canadian football, leaving an indelible legacy on the sport through his exceptional skills, accolades, and fight against racial inequality. His contributions paved the way for future generations of athletes and continue to inspire football players both in Canada and the United States. Miles passed away on August 8, 1995, leaving behind a lasting impact on the sport and the countless fans who still hold him in high regard.
