Russell Erxleben

Russell Erxleben Bio

Russell Erxleben is a former American football player known for his time as a punter and placekicker in the National Football League (NFL). Born on January 13, 1957, in Seguin, Texas, Erxleben made a name for himself with his exceptional kicking abilities, garnering attention from college recruiters and ultimately securing a scholarship to the University of Texas at Austin. During his college career, Erxleben set several records and became the first player in NCAA history to kick a field goal from beyond 60 yards. Erxleben's impressive collegiate career led him to be selected as the 11th overall pick in the first round of the 1979 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints. In his rookie seasons, he showcased his powerful leg by nailing a 63-yard field goal, making it the longest in NFL history at the time. Despite his early success, Erxleben struggled with consistency and injuries, which limited his overall impact in the NFL. However, Erxleben's legacy goes beyond his football career. In 1999, he pleaded guilty to a multitude of charges, including securities fraud, conspiracy, and money laundering, for his involvement in an investment scam that defrauded investors out of millions of dollars. He was subsequently sentenced to 84 months in federal prison. In recent years, Erxleben has been released from prison and has attempted to rebuild his life outside of the public eye. While his football career showcases his talent and potential, his subsequent legal troubles have garnered attention as a cautionary tale in the NFL and the wider sporting community.
