"I adore art... when I am alone with my notes, my heart pounds and the tears stream from my eyes, and my emotion and my joys are too much to bear."

Alexander Thomson

Alexander Thomson Bio

Alexander "Greek" Thomson, also known as Alexander "Greek" Thomson Kirkland, was a prominent Scottish architect who left a remarkable legacy in the United Kingdom during the 19th century. Born on 9 April 1817 in Balfron, Stirlingshire, Thomson's architectural style stood out by combining elements of Greek, Egyptian, and Oriental designs. His work can be seen predominantly in his hometown of Glasgow, where he designed numerous buildings that demonstrated his mastery of classical architecture. Thomson was not formally educated in architecture but instead developed his skills through practical experience. As a young man, he spent several years working as an apprentice to the architect Robert Foote, followed by a period of independent study in Italy and Greece where his fascination with ancient architectural styles began to flourish. This intense intellectual curiosity laid the foundation for Thomson's unique design approach, earning him the nickname "Greek Thomson." Thomson's architectural career spanned over three decades, during which he designed some of Glasgow's most iconic structures. His works include the St. Vincent Street Church, the Egyptian Halls, and the Holmwood House, among others. His buildings incorporated symbolic and ornamental motifs, creating harmonious and visually stunning structures that pushed the boundaries of Victorian architecture. Despite his innovative designs, Thomson faced financial difficulties throughout his career and was often unrecognized by his contemporaries. Tragically, he passed away at the age of 57 on 22 March 1875, leaving behind an impressive architectural legacy that has since gained appreciation and acclaim. Today, Alexander "Greek" Thomson's work continues to captivate architects, historians, and admirers of architectural beauty, solidifying his status as one of the most influential architects of his time in the United Kingdom.
