Garry Birtles
Garry Birtles Bio
Garry Birtles is a British former professional footballer, widely known for his contributions to Nottingham Forest Football Club during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Birtles, born on 27 July 1956 in Long Eaton, Derbyshire, began his football career as a teenager, joining Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1974. However, it was at Nottingham Forest where he would make his name and achieve great success.
Birtles joined Nottingham Forest in 1976 and quickly established himself as a key player in Brian Clough's formidable team. He played as a striker and possessed an excellent goal-scoring ability, contributing significantly to the club's achievements during his tenure. Forest enjoyed immense success during the late 1970s, securing promotion to the top flight and winning two consecutive European Cups in 1979 and 1980, with Birtles playing a vital role in these victories.
In addition to his club success, Garry Birtles earned three caps for the England national team in 1980. Despite his talent and impressive performances for Forest, Birtles struggled to replicate his club form at the international level, and his international career was short-lived.
Following his time at Nottingham Forest, Birtles had spells with various clubs, including Manchester United, Notts County, and Grimsby Town, before retiring from professional football in 1993. Since his retirement, he has worked as a pundit and commentator, providing expert analysis on football matches and sharing his insights and experiences with fans and viewers.
Garry Birtles remains a legendary figure in the history of Nottingham Forest and is widely regarded as one of the club's greatest players. His contributions to the team's success during their golden era and his goal-scoring prowess have earned him a place in the hearts of Forest fans.
