Born on June 20, 1973, in La Plata, Buenos Aires Province, Basualdo began his football career in the early 1990s. He is best known for his versatility on the field, as he was able to play in various positions including central midfield, right back, and defensive midfield. Throughout his career, Basualdo has represented a number of prominent clubs and also earned numerous caps for the Argentine national team. Basualdo's professional career took off in 1990 when he joined Quilmes Atlético Club. His performances quickly attracted attention, leading to a move to Estudiantes de La Plata in 1992. During his time at Estudiantes, Basualdo helped the team reach the Copa Libertadores final in 1993, a remarkable achievement in South American football. His impressive performances did not go unnoticed by national team selectors, and he made his debut for Argentina in 1994. In 1995, Basualdo moved to River Plate, one of Argentina's most successful clubs. During his three-year stay at River Plate, he won multiple domestic titles, including the prestigious Argentine Primera División championship in 1996. Basualdo's solid displays in midfield earned him a transfer to European football, as he joined Spanish club Real Mallorca in 1998. His time in Spain was relatively short-lived, and he returned to Argentina to play for top-tier clubs such as Independiente and Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata before retiring in 2004.
