Devin Kelley was an American mass murderer who killed 26 people and injured 20 others in a shooting at a church in Texas in 2017. Kelley was born on February 21, 1991, in New Braunfels, Texas, and grew up in the town of San Marcos, where he attended school until he dropped out in the ninth grade. He later joined the United States Air Force in 2010, but was discharged in 2014 after being court-martialed for assaulting his then-wife and stepson. After his discharge from the Air Force, Devin Kelley became increasingly erratic and was accused of threatening former classmates and ex-girlfriends. Additionally, he had a history of mental illness, including a diagnosis of depression, and had been prescribed medication to manage his condition. Despite this, Kelley was still able to purchase firearms legally, leading to the tragic mass shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas. The shooting at the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs on November 5, 2017, shocked the nation and led to renewed calls for stricter gun laws. Kelley entered the church armed with a semiautomatic rifle and began firing indiscriminately at the congregation. He was eventually confronted by a local resident, who engaged in a shootout with Kelley and pursued him in a car until he crashed and took his own life. The tragedy in Sutherland Springs was one of the deadliest mass shootings in modern American history, and brought renewed attention to issues such as mental health, gun control, and domestic violence. However, despite the loss of so many innocent lives, the legacy of Devin Kelley remains a stark reminder of the dangers posed by those who are able to access weapons of mass destruction.
