Earl Francis Lloyd was an American basketball player who made history as the first African American to play in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Born on April 3, 1928, in Alexandria, Virginia, Lloyd grew up amidst racial segregation and faced numerous challenges throughout his career due to his race. However, he persevered and achieved significant milestones both on and off the court, becoming an inspiration to future generations.
Earl Lloyd attended West Virginia State College, where he honed his basketball skills and became a standout player. He led the school's basketball team to two consecutive CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) championships in 1948 and 1949. Following his college career, Lloyd was drafted by the Washington Capitols in the ninth round of the 1950 NBA Draft.
On October 31, 1950, Earl Lloyd made history by becoming the first African American player to step onto an NBA court. He played for the Washington Capitols against the Rochester Royals, becoming a trailblazer for future generations of African American players in the NBA. Despite facing significant racial discrimination, Lloyd continued to excel in the sport, playing for teams like the Syracuse Nationals and winning an NBA championship in 1955.
Outside of his playing career, Earl Lloyd was also passionate about advocating for racial equality and breaking down barriers in professional sports. After retiring from playing, he became one of the league's first African American assistant coaches, working with the Detroit Pistons and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
