Howie Schultz Bio

Howie Schultz, also known as Howard Schultz, is an American businessman and entrepreneur who rose to prominence as the former CEO and chairman of Starbucks Coffee Company. Born on July 19, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York, Schultz has built an iconic reputation in the coffee industry and revolutionized the way the world consumes coffee. With his visionary leadership, Schultz transformed Starbucks from a small Seattle-based coffee shop into a global phenomenon, expanding its operations and making it one of the most recognizable brands worldwide.

After graduating from Northern Michigan University, Schultz started his career with Xerox Corporation as a salesperson. However, his true passion for coffee emerged when he discovered a small coffee company called Starbucks during a business trip to Seattle in 1981. Charmed by the coffee culture in Italy, Schultz saw the potential to bring that experience to America. In 1982, he joined the company as the director of operations and marketing.

However, it was in 1987 that Schultz made his biggest impact on Starbucks. Despite facing initial resistance, Schultz convinced the Starbucks owners to experiment with the concept of espresso bars within their stores. This move marked the beginning of an era of rapid expansion and innovation that would transform Starbucks into a household name. Schultz's vision for Starbucks extended beyond just selling coffee; he believed in creating a unique experience, emphasizing exceptional customer service and building a sense of community within each store.

Under Schultz's leadership, Starbucks grew exponentially, opening stores both domestically and internationally. By the early 2000s, it had become a global brand, with more than 17,000 locations in over 50 countries. Schultz stepped down as CEO in 2000 but returned to the position in 2008, successfully leading the company through challenges such as the global economic recession. During his tenure, Schultz focused on social initiatives, pushing Starbucks to be more environmentally friendly and providing healthcare benefits to employees.

Beyond his achievements at Starbucks, Schultz has ventured into other endeavors, including philanthropy, authorship, and political involvement. He has expressed his interest in public service and has been a strong advocate for issues such as youth employment and veterans' rights. Schultz's contributions to the coffee industry and his visionary leadership at Starbucks have made him an influential figure not just in the business world but also in the realm of corporate social responsibility.
