Hailing from Jersey City, New Jersey, O'Koren established himself as a dominant force on the basketball court during his collegiate years and later had a successful career in the National Basketball Association (NBA). O'Koren's journey to prominence began at Bayonne High School in Bayonne, New Jersey, where he showcased his immense talent as a basketball player. Honing his skills, the 6'7" forward soon drew attention from several top universities nationwide. Eventually, he opted to play college basketball at the esteemed University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, under the guidance of legendary coach Dean Smith.

Following his successful collegiate career, O'Koren entered the NBA, where he was selected by the New Jersey Nets as the sixth overall pick in the 1980 NBA Draft. Over the course of his eight-year NBA career, he proved to be a key player for the Nets, known for his scoring prowess, rebounding ability, and remarkable defensive skills. O'Koren's contributions played a crucial role in the team's success, helping the Nets reach the playoffs for four consecutive seasons from 1982 to 1986.
After his playing career, O'Koren transitioned into coaching and held various coaching positions in the NBA and collegiate basketball. He served as the head coach for Rutgers University's men's basketball team from 1997 to 1998 and later worked as an assistant coach for several NBA teams, including the Washington Wizards and the Milwaukee Bucks.
