Curt Motton

Curt Motton Bio

Curt Motton, born Curtis Lee Motton on September 24, 1940, in Darnestown, Maryland, was an American professional baseball player who gained recognition for his prowess on the diamond. Although not a household name, Motton found success during his tenure in Major League Baseball (MLB) in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He primarily played as an outfielder and is mostly remembered for his contributions to the Baltimore Orioles.

Motton began his professional baseball career after being signed by the Baltimore Orioles as an amateur free agent in 1959. He spent several seasons in the minor leagues before making his MLB debut on May 6, 1967. Known for his excellent speed and versatility, Motton proved to be a valuable asset to the Orioles' lineup. He played alongside other renowned teammates such as Frank Robinson, Brooks Robinson, and Boog Powell.

During his time with the Orioles, Motton showcased his ability to hit for power and steal bases. His speed and agility allowed him to cover significant ground in the outfield, earning him a reputation as a reliable defender. Motton's best season came in 1970 when he played a pivotal role in the Orioles' World Series championship. In the postseason that year, he hit .286 with two home runs and seven runs batted in, proving crucial to the team's success.

Despite his contributions to the Orioles' championship run, Motton's career saw a decline in the following years due to injuries and a decrease in playing time. After being released by the Orioles in 1973, he had brief stints with the Atlanta Braves and the Milwaukee Brewers before retiring from professional baseball in 1974. Motton's lasting impact on the Orioles organization has been recognized through his induction into the Orioles Hall of Fame in 2013.

Though Curt Motton may not be universally recognized in the realm of celebrities, his achievements and contributions to the sport of baseball are certainly noteworthy. His exceptional athleticism and contributions to the Baltimore Orioles during their triumphant 1970 season have solidified his place in the hearts of Orioles fans. While his playing career may have been relatively short-lived, Motton's passion for the game and his memorable time in the MLB make him a deserving figure in American sports history.
