"Deaf people can do anything except hear."
Laurent Clerc
Laurent Clerc Bio
Laurent Clerc, born on December 26, 1785, in La Balme-les-Grottes, France, was a Swiss celebrity widely recognized as a pioneer in Deaf education and co-founder of the first Deaf school in the United States. Despite being Swiss by nationality, Clerc held a significant impact on American history through his contributions to the education and empowerment of the Deaf community. Clerc, who lost his hearing at the tender age of one due to a childhood illness, became profoundly deaf. His parents, who were fervent believers in their son's intellectual capabilities, sought the best possible education for him. At 12 years old, Clerc enrolled in the Royal Institute for the Deaf in Paris, where he excelled academically, mastering multiple languages, including French, English, and Latin. In 1816, Thomas Gallaudet, an American educator passionate about establishing a school for the Deaf in America, met Clerc in Paris. Together, they formed a partnership that would revolutionize Deaf education. The collaboration between Clerc and Gallaudet led to the founding of the American School for the Deaf in Hartford, Connecticut in 1817. Clerc became the school's first Deaf teacher, contributing his expertise in developing its curriculum and teaching methods. Laurent Clerc's impact resounded far beyond the American School for the Deaf. His influence extended to the broader Deaf community, as he tirelessly advocated for their rights, education, and acceptance in society. His teaching methods, involving sign language as the primary mode of communication, gained recognition as an effective and natural way for Deaf individuals to learn. To this day, Clerc is celebrated for his efforts in supporting the empowerment and inclusion of Deaf individuals in education and society.
