Al Holbert

Al Holbert Bio

Al Holbert, born on November 11, 1946, in Abington, Pennsylvania, was an American racing driver and team owner. He made a significant mark in the world of motorsports, particularly in sports car racing during the 1970s and 1980s. Holbert's expertise spanned across various racing disciplines, including endurance racing and NASCAR, where he competed against some of the finest drivers on both national and international circuits. Holbert's career in motorsports began in the late 1960s when he competed in club racing events in the United States. Throughout the early 1970s, he made a name for himself by achieving success in SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) events, earning multiple national championships. This success led him to make his debut in professional racing in 1974, driving for Porsche in the IMSA GT Championship. Holbert's partnership with Porsche proved to be highly successful and would define a significant portion of his career. He became an instrumental figure in the development and testing of Porsche race cars, playing a vital role in the evolution of their competitive models. His skill behind the wheel, combined with his technical understanding of the machinery, made him a valuable asset for Porsche's factory racing efforts. One of the highlights of Holbert's career came in 1983 when he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Driving a Porsche 956 alongside co-drivers Hurley Haywood and Vern Schuppan, their victory marked the fourth consecutive win for Porsche at the prestigious endurance event. This achievement further solidified Holbert's reputation as one of the leading figures in sports car racing. Tragically, Al Holbert's life was cut short on September 30, 1988, when he was involved in a fatal plane crash in Columbus, Ohio. At the time of his death, he was leading the IMSA GT Championship and was set to secure his fourth consecutive title. Nonetheless, Holbert's impact on motorsports remains indelible, with his dedication, skill, and passion for racing leaving behind a lasting legacy.
