Eric Medlen was an American professional race car driver, best known for his accomplishments in the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Funny Car division. Born on August 13, 1973, in Oakdale, California, Medlen had a natural affinity for all things fast and furious. He began his racing career at a young age, honing his skills in various motorsports before settling into a successful tenure in drag racing.
Medlen quickly made a name for himself in the NHRA, joining John Force Racing in 2004 as a part of their formidable Funny Car team. With the backing of one of the most revered names in drag racing, Medlen had big shoes to fill, as he effectively replaced the legendary driver, Tony Pedregon. However, he proved himself worthy of the position, displaying remarkable talent, unmatched dedication, and a down-to-earth personality that made him a fan favorite.
In 2006, Eric Medlen achieved his career highlight and solidified his place among racing's elite when he clinched the NHRA Funny Car Championship. Winning a total of 15 NHRA national events, including the prestigious U.S. Nationals in 2006, Medlen emerged as a force to be reckoned with. His accomplishments were not just limited to the track — his collaboration with John Force Racing also led to numerous advancements in Funny Car technology, making their vehicles faster and safer.
Sadly, tragedy struck the racing world on March 23, 2007, when Eric Medlen suffered a severe crash during a test session in Gainesville, Florida. Despite receiving immediate medical attention, Medlen succumbed to his injuries on March 23, 2007, leaving behind a devastated racing community and countless fans mourning the loss of a remarkable talent. His tragic passing sparked a renewed emphasis on driver safety in NHRA and motorsports as a whole, as the memory of a beloved champion continues to live on.
