Tiny Lund Bio
Tiny Lund, born as DeWayne Louis Lund on November 14, 1929, in Harlan, Iowa, was an American NASCAR driver and legendary figure in the world of motorsports. Despite his relatively short stature, standing at 6 feet 5 inches tall, Lund earned the nickname "Tiny" due to his larger-than-life personality and remarkable racing skills. Lund's career spanned over two decades and left an indelible mark on the sport.
Lund's interest in racing began at an early age when he started competing on dirt tracks across the state of Iowa. His talent quickly caught the attention of racing enthusiasts, and he soon made his debut in the NASCAR Grand National Series in 1955. Over the years, Lund built a reputation as a fierce competitor, known for his exceptional driving skills and fearlessness on the track.
One of the most significant moments in Lund's career came in the 1963 Daytona 500, an event that would forever etch his name in NASCAR history. During the race, Lund witnessed a fiery crash that left fellow driver and friend, Marvin Panch, trapped inside his burning car. Without hesitation, Lund sprang into action, pulling Panch to safety moments before the car exploded. Lund's heroism earned him national recognition, and for his bravery, he was awarded the Carnegie Hero Fund Medal.
In addition to his heroics off the track, Lund also enjoyed competitive success. He earned multiple victories, including the prestigious Southern 500 in 1963. Lund's accomplishments and undeniable talent solidified his place as one of the most beloved and respected figures in NASCAR. Sadly, Lund's career was cut short when he tragically passed away in a crash at the Talladega Superspeedway in August 1975, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire and resonate with racing enthusiasts to this day.
