John Loder was a British actor and producer who enjoyed a long and successful career both in the UK and in Hollywood. Born on January 3, 1898, in London, Loder's real name was William John Muir Lowe. He served in World War I before embarking on a career in acting, studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Loder made his stage debut in 1924 before making his film debut in 1926 in the silent film "Mumsie." He went on to star in over 70 films over his long career. Loder gained fame for his role in Alfred Hitchcock's 1936 film "Sabotage," where he played undercover detective Ted Spencer. He also appeared in other Hitchcock films, including "Secret Agent" and "The Lady Vanishes." In addition to his acting work, Loder produced and directed several films. In 1951, he started his own production company, Lippert Pictures, which produced a number of low-budget films in the 1950s. Despite his success in Hollywood, Loder maintained close ties to his homeland of England throughout his life. He served as a member of Parliament from 1951 to 1955, representing the Conservative Party. He was also a member of the Royal Air Force during World War II. Loder continued to act in films and on stage until his retirement in the 1960s. He passed away on December 26, 1988, in California, at the age of 90.
