Gennady Ovsyannikov is considered one of the most successful coaches in the history of Belarusian sports. He was born in 1948 in the city of Grodno, which, at the time, was part of the Soviet Union. Ovsyannikov started his career as a cross-country skier, but a shoulder injury forced him to end his athletic career early.
