Thea Holme was a renowned British author, journalist, and broadcaster who lived from 1915 to 1991. She was born in Painswick, Gloucestershire, where her father was a clergyman. Holme attended the prestigious Roedean School in Brighton before studying English at St Anne’s College, Oxford. During World War II, she worked as a personnel officer and later as a petty officer for the Women’s Royal Naval Service.
After the war, Holme pursued a career in journalism and writing. She worked for BBC Television, presenting programs on topics ranging from cooking to gardening, and authored several books on gardening and the countryside. She was known for her intricate knowledge of plants, and her work was highly regarded in the gardening community. In addition to her gardening books, Holme wrote novels, biographies, and memoirs.
Despite her many successes, Her biggest achievement was the publication of her novel “The September Grass,” in 1958. The novel was a best-seller and was shortlisted for the prestigious Booker Prize. It was praised for its vivid descriptions of country life and its sensitive portrayal of family relationships. In addition to “The September Grass,” Holme’s other notable works include “A Garden from a Hundred Packets of Seed,” “Things to Make,” “The Picture of Beatrice,” and “Australian Voices: Writers and Their Work.”
Today, Holme is remembered as a talented author and gardening expert who brought a love of nature and the countryside to her readers. Her work on gardening and the environment were ahead of their time, and her beautiful prose continues to inspire gardeners and nature-lovers around the world.
