On This Day in History - May 1, 1945

May 1, 1945 #OTD World War II: Battle of Berlin Another breakout attempt takes place at Friedrichstrasse where remains of small pockets of German troops try to flee from Berlin to the North. Among the group was King Tiger tank #314 (Pictured) which was commanded by Georg Diers. The group tried to push through towards Friedrichstraße station. King Tiger no.314 pushed forward through heavy fire losing all infantry support in the process. Ironically, despite the successful advance of the tank, it was disabled soon after by a German mine. Georg Diers and his crew abandoned the tank. But, they failed to reach the Allied lines. All of them, except his loader Alex Sommer (who was shot in the stomach and declared missing), were eventually captured by the Soviets. This is a nonpolitical post.
