I always amend this with "as if you lived the life of the other person." I have had local missionaries try to convince me to join their church under the "do unto others (...)" motto. They would want to be converted because they already believe in their religion. I however have no interest in religion and find it highly annoying to when people try to convince me that I am wrong. I am kind in the way I handle the situation. I don't try to counter convert them. I give them time to introduce themselves, and give their pitch before say that I am firm in my beliefs and that I respect that they feel differently. They generally try one more time, but are sometimes more insistent, and still I respond with "I'm sorry, but I'm still not interested. Thank you for your time and I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day." If I approached it from my perspective, I would want to talk theory and questions about universal truths that are hidden across belief systems. But that is what I want, not what they want.
