Orlando Martins was a British-Nigerian actor, director and playwright, who left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry. Born in Lagos, Nigeria in 1899, Martins later moved to England, where he became known for his pioneering work in black theatre in the mid-20th century. Despite facing prejudice and discrimination, he became one of the few black actors to attain success in the British film industry before the Second World War. As a performer, Martins was a versatile talent who was equally at home in drama and comedy. He made his film debut in 1935 in the crime thriller "Murder by Rope", and went on to appear in a number of other popular movies, including "The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp" (1943), "The Red Shoes" (1948) and "The Thief of Bagdad" (1940). He also appeared in several notable plays in the West End theatre district, often receiving critical acclaim for his performances. In addition to his acting work, Martins was also an accomplished playwright and director. His most successful play, "The Black Jacobins", was a historical drama that explored the Haitian Revolution of the late 18th century, and was widely praised for its bold political commentary and portrayal of black characters. He also directed a number of productions, including "Angela Is 22" and "The Importance of Being Earnest", both of which were well received. Despite his achievements, Martins remained committed to fighting racial discrimination in the entertainment industry throughout his career, and challenged the stereotypical roles often given to black actors.
