Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, commonly known as Nana Konadu, is a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics and public life. She was born on November 17, 1948, in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. Nana Konadu is best known as the wife of Jerry John Rawlings, the former President of Ghana. However, she is also a highly respected personality in her own right, having made significant contributions to women empowerment, social activism, and political leadership in Ghana. Nana Konadu's involvement in public service began when her husband seized power in a military coup in 1981. As the First Lady of Ghana, she took on numerous responsibilities, with a particular focus on issues affecting women and children. She played a pivotal role in the establishment of the 31st December Women's Movement, an organization committed to advocating for gender equality and women's rights in Ghana. Nana Konadu also spearheaded various initiatives aimed at improving the socio-economic conditions of Ghanaian women, such as microfinance programs and vocational training centers. In addition to her work in women empowerment, Nana Konadu has been an active participant in Ghanaian politics. In 2016, she became the presidential candidate for the National Democratic Party (NDP), a political party she founded in 2012. Her decision to contest the presidential elections was considered historic, as she became the first woman in Ghana to run as a presidential candidate from a major political party. Although she did not win the election, her candidacy marked a significant milestone for women's political participation in Ghana. Furthermore, Nana Konadu's leadership and activism have earned her international recognition. She has received various accolades, including the Kora All African Music Award for Outstanding Contribution to Social Development in 2002. Throughout her career, Nana Konadu has been a prominent advocate for democracy, gender equality, and social justice in Ghana.
