Do long distance relationships work?

They can but they are a uphill battle and very much depend on the connection preferences of the two partners. If they are both someone who can get most of their satisfaction from online communication and have little need for close proximity connections. Possible to work but it's when attempting to close the gap or being unable to that causes the problems. Long distance relationship needs mountains of trust and communication which can make you feel neglected with too little or overwhelmed with too much. Over all it's a very thin foundation prone to crumble. Which is why they rarely last  or evolve into long term relationships.

I personally could not handle a long distance relationship. But it's genuinely up to the individuals. They both need to want it and put in the work. I've known a few couples now that have been in a long distance relationship and eventually one would move. Several couples I've known long distance has since been married. All of them have said it's hard and it takes work on both sides. So while it's definitely possible, it's not by any means easy.

For me personally, I couldn't take the pressure of having to talk to someone online or on the phone every day, but if it's a much more casual sort of relationship where I'm free to focus more on other things, it probably could work pretty well. I just hate being tied down by electronic devices.

I can say, though, the long distance ones can be very very real. You don't have that same primal drive, you can connect and really get to know one another.

And I don't think anybody should settle. Not for a.. cousin, if you're British royalty, or a high-school sweetheart, or "the best the town has to offer", because your soulmate could be on the other side of the planet looking for you.

On the other hand, being alone ain't fun either. I guess it depends on the person and their needs.
