“Block” ruling

This evening I was playing a rec game and someone went up for a block. The ball hit off their “block” and went straight up, the same player proceeded to jump and spike the ball. I know you can hit the ball again after a block, but this felt like more of a set than a block and very much not in the spirit of the blocked hit rule. Is there some sort of rule that says you can’t “attack” a ball you blocked? Or maybe the ball wouldn’t count as blocked?
