Žanka Stokić was a Serbian actress, theater director, and professor remembered for her contributions to the Serbian theater scene. She was born in Belgrade on January 13, 1927, and spent much of her childhood in Skopje, where she attended elementary school. After the family moved back to Belgrade, Stokić attended the First Female Gymnasium and then moved on to the Faculty of Philosophy. She graduated in 1950 with a degree in literature and art history.
Upon graduation, Stokić started working at the Belgrade Drama Theater, where she stayed until 1952. During this time, she played notable roles such as Laura in Tennesse Williams' "The Glass Menagerie" and Molly in "The Women of Troy." In 1952 Stokić moved to the Atelier 212 theater where she became an original member of the leading ensemble. She founded a drama studio within the theater where she trained the younger actors. Stokić continued playing significant roles such as Gertrude in Hamlet, Mary in Gorky's Enemy of People, and Dušica in Nesic's Bald Heads.
Furthermore, she directed stage plays in Atelier 212, including the play "Šarena Lađa" and the famous Serbian piece "Korešpondencija," which received critical acclaim. Her outstanding performances and directorial abilities earned her recognition in the Serbian theater community, making her a celebrated figure.Žanka Stokić passed away on March 30, 2009, in Belgrade, leaving behind her remarkable contribution to the Serbian and Balkan theater. Her legacy and impact continue to inspire the upcoming generations of artists and actors in Serbia.
