Asivak Koostachin is a Cree filmmaker and visual artist from Canada. She was born and raised in the remote Cree community of Attawapiskat in Northern Ontario. Koostachin is known for her work in addressing social issues including indigenous rights, mental health, and environmental degradation among indigenous communities. Koostachin went on to study film production at Confederation College in Thunder Bay, Ontario. After completing her studies, she founded her production company called Asiskoot Animation. Koostachin's short film, “As Long as the Rivers Flow,” premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. The film is a heartfelt and emotional response to the increasing number of indigenous women and girls who go missing or are murdered in Canada. This film marked a turning point in Koostachin’s career, as it put her work on a global stage and made her a role model within the indigenous filmmaking community. In addition to her film work, Koostachin is also known for her visual art and activism.
