As the protests grip Bangladesh, we go back to the pages of history. We trace one of its earlier trysts with resistance to a revolt from 1857!

Earlier known as Victoria Park, the Bahadur Shah Zafar Park at Dhaka marks the sacrifices of the revolting sepoys (of the British East India Company) stationed at Dhaka and Chittagong during the 1857 mutiny, who were hanged here. 

After Mangal Pandey's execution on 8 April 1857, some of the companies under the 34th Bengal Native Infantry were disbanded, while a few were transferred to Chittagong due to their loyalty. While the fire of revolt was raging in Northern and Central India, Eastern Bengal remained quiet. The men stationed at Chittagong however, slowly came in contact with some Fairazi movement soldiers, along with the men who were either on leave or disbanded for sympathizing with the revolting sepoys. They decided to march for Delhi. 

On 18 November 1857, after having a field meal, the mutineer sepoys raided the municipality building, armoury and jail at Chittagong. They looted wealth, and weapons, and freed the prisoners from the jail. While they set some buildings on fire, no European was hurt. A major chunk of them was put up within the boats and ships next to the Chittagong port as a medium of escape in case of emergency. Yet a few of the mutineers got arrested by the deployed British soldiers, from where they got to know about the next destination: Dhaka. 

Sooner, the British authorities informed their Dhaka contemporaries about the plan. Without any delay, on 22 November 1857, they disarmed their native sepoys stationed at their official buildings. But by the time they reached the Lalbagh fort, to their surprise, they found their armed native sepoys along with their Chittagong comrades. Thus, a heavy battle ensued in which 41 mutineer sepoys died and 80 got injured. The remaining got into various groups and escaped to different directions as far as Karimganj in Assam and Rangpur in West Bengal. 

The British then deployed its 54th regiment along with a hundred sailors to combat the mutineer sepoys. In this search operation, about twenty mutineer soldiers were found and after a quick trial, they were hanged in Victoria Park. 

In 1957, when the revolt of 1857 completed a century, the park was renamed after the last Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar, whose court was the destination for the mutineer sepoys. With a few more architectural additions,
