Used to be a big Markiplier fan; Grew up with him creating the Warfstache sketches, a Heist with Markiplier and in Space in Markiplier... so I am not surprised that he has directed his own movie.  Will happily go and support his project/work as he has had a big influence throughout the years.

Im going to see Iron Lung this weekend, but my opinion will be skewed because I enjoy his content. Is anybody neutral and can give their opinion on the movie? (Without spoilers please)

My biggest concern before seeing  the movie was that is was a  2 hour film.  How on Earth will this movie adaption of a 45 minute game be kept interesting for 2 hours?  The only spoiler alert; it was interesting throughout!

The drip feeding of the background to the story was great; though dont play the drinking game "down a shot every time the f bomb is used".

The camera angles and portrayal of Simon (i.e. Markiplier) was very creative, keeping it mysterious, ambigious and a sense of helplessness throughout. The use of lighting was amazing too. I never once felt that it was repeating itself.

Even if you dont know who Markiplier is, or no care of video games; still go watch it.  The pacing is great and the sense of dread is kept up throughout.

The ending is enjoyable; yes I can understand how some people find it difficult to follow the movie or explain what happens, but there's enough in there to work it out.

Highly recommend!

First film from Paul Thomas Anderson I saw, and I have to say, I need more 😄 Definitely get the hype the name has been bringing around the yard for ages.

Seeing this in cinema with friends was a blast, some scenes obvious caricatures of characters, other ones switching tones so abruptly from comedy to thriller, to the grotesque, I felt glued to the seat.

The topic of migration, extremism, civil disobedience, and governmental omnipresence is more pressing than ever, and the performance of Sean Penn really will stay with me for the longest, I forgot how versatile he is, and this is the same level of acting prowess as he had in Mystic River eons ago.

DiCaprio's clueless but trying father role is commendable, and seeing him in a more tragic-comedic style has been a treat. I don't think I ever watched him as a sole family provider and his character arch is very believable - having given up the revolution, how do you remember code words and extraction points?

The actress of Perfidia, Teyana Taylor, love you so much! The dialogue is so out there, and so unbelievable at times but she makes it work and owns the larger than life personality of a woman who acts like a male revolutionary and pays the price for it. I also enjoyed the performance of Chase Infiniti as Wills, a rebellious teenager caught in the middle - however, Regina Hall as Deandra steals the show whenever she is on screen! She will forever be Brenda from the Scary Movies for me but I'd be so curious to see her in more roles and standalone characters. Her line delivery is magnificent, her facial expressions so on point, ah! Loved recognising her!

The small role of Benicio del Toro reminds me so much of Sicario and Fear&Loathing in Las Vegas with his great comedic timing and the whole setup of being a Sensei and a monumental figure for the local community, a treat!

Overall, one hell of a ride to see, and I look forward to catching up on previous work wfrom Anderson 😊

About to see “The Housemaid”

Saw “Song Sung Blue” last night at Showcase & now a double today in 4K at the Brattle with “Charade” & “Brazil”.

Moviegoing Friday & Saturday

Rob Reiner: an artist who first made his mark as Michael “Meathead” Stivic after handful of notable TV appearances.  Reiner however, the scion of comedy legend Carl Reiner, went onto even bigger things as a respected film director, all while maintaining an acting career.

To look at his filmmaking career, beginning with the immortal “This is Spinal Tap”, taking turns in front of & behjnd the camera in such a groundbreaking mockumentary, Reiner directed some genuine classics that transcended the 80s by helming “The Sure Thing”, “Stand By Me” & the absolutely timeless “When Harry Met Sally”, a film that I think in essence, may be the defining romantic comedy of its year & a crown jewel under his cap.  But then there was a shift into more dramatic & thriller territory: returning to Stephen King as the director of “Misery”, directing a strong cast in the courtroom drama “A Few Good Men” & the political romantic comedy “The American President”.

But Reiner continued acting: costarring as the wise friends to Tom Hanks & Bruce Willis in other films, an exploitative TV network president in “EdTV”, the rightfully fed up father to Leonardo DiCaprio in “The Wolf of Wall Street” among a lot of other solid acting parts.

Few have been able to reach a career zenith as both a longtime performer but critically acclaimed director and Reiner was easily in that category/

About to see this forgotten one

Finally managed to attend a film discussion club meeting in person in Warsaw in the Kinoteka cineema, and how wonderful a Saturday this chance at tickets was!

"Nice Job" as the rough translation goes, is a one kind of a film that needs to be seen and whose impact can only be shared via music, sensuality, and stolen glances.

Following a rather dreamlike narration diving into the life and misdeeds of a disgraced French Foreign Legion Chief warrant officer, we delve into the world of masculinity deliminated by force, physicality, pointless rituals and hierarchy. 

Ballet choreography, female gaze-focused cinematography, we witness a monumental work devoid nearly of dialogue but frought with internal turmoil, desire, disgrace and madness that rivals Lord of The Flies, Broderskab, and Moonlight.

Loved the discussion that followed, and I feel my love for cinema reignated once more.

After understanding the plot of 'Close' (2022), I actually somewhat understood why did Japan win an Academy Award in the following year.  

Simple. The Jury there didn't choose 'Monster' (2023) as its entry, which nearly had the same theme and plot too revolving two early teen boys. Interestingly, while both won accolades at the Cannes Film Festival,  one award was common : The Queer Palm. 

No wonder, Japan chose 'Perfect Days' rather, that eventually got them the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film!

A Strange Cinematic Coincidence

Thought this looked really interesting and thought that my local theater was going to screen it…and then they weren’t.  So off to the city to catch it…

Casual post

Finally caught this one.  Not bad.  Not great.  I’m still a James L. Brooks fan and this movie definitely still had that JLB-style comedy: comedy from the human condition.  The critics may or may not pile on.  The ending felt a little contrived.  But a semi-trite movie overall.

This is legit just the plot of Heretic.

Aftersun (2022/ MUBI): A coming-of-age biographical film that follows a woman's last holiday with her father, where she encounters and learns the elements that make up the 'adult world'. Set in Turkiye (a country presently known for majorly wrong reasons), the film carries some imprints of Richard Linklater's classics, that have been brilliantly amalgamanted under a single cinematic constraint. 

Superhero Movie (2008/ YouTube and Google TV): If you like the Scary Movie series, you are surely going to love this film (Fun Fact: it has got some of its cast too). Yes, coming from the same franchise makers, this film mocks all the superhero-themed films with the narration following that of Spiderman's first part (2002). The film is an amazing laugh-riot since its beginning and ends up as intriguing stuff that can be seen with friends, even over drinks. But make sure, you limit your consumption to avoid drinks' spilling!
