Despite the excessive length, this film is a rare example of a Masala flick with solid writing. As a surprise attack from Telugu Cinema, whose theme smartly invests in human fury, this Vikram Athreya directorial has humane and grey characters that are necessarily well-loaded and also has songs, without any dancing around the trees stuff. Though it does show the required heroism by the lead actor Nani (fondly addressed as 'Natural Star'), the film is enhanced by the supporting cast led by the terrific SJ Suryah (reminiscent of his 2021 thriller 'Manaadu') and Murali Sharma, whose chemistry is just the firework we needed.

Question of the day

Vaazhai (2024/ Tamil/ Disney Hotstar): Director Mari Selvaraj (of Pariyerum Perumal fame) strikes back with a bang after last year's colossal disappointment 'Maamannan'. Based on a real-life incident straight from Selvaraj's life, the film focuses on a child who refuses to go lugging in Banana plantations and the events that unfold further. It carries some relief based on relationships which are sweet. Ended on a tragic note, the film is a gritty portayal of rural casteism with shades of communism, that carry Selvaraj's stamp of symbolism which he has been carrying forward since his debut film 'Pariyerum Perumal' in most of the film. What is worth noting is the editing (Suriya Pradhaman) who adds a new dimension to Selvaraj's narration. There is symbolism, contrast and push too, thus a masterclass in editing. Then comes the score by Santhosh Narayanan who is amazing and brings on all the elements to craft a narration-complimenting score. In performances, the lead child artists Ponvel .M and Rahul. R are 'straight outta Iranian Cinema' sorts whose camaraderie is just amazing, Kalaiyarasan is the real hero, without whom the film wouldn't have been completed and  Nikhila Vimal's role is reminiscent of Anandhi's excellence in 'PP'. Do watch this, this is a gentle and striking ode to contemporary Indian cinema.

Heavy Metal 1981

If you want to refresh and restart, this film is just the antidote. A brilliant and subtle take on toxicity in gender and relationships, the film revolves around a girl, who is slowly coming out of her past. Yet something strikes pleasantly, which ends up taking her back. Great performances (including the comedian Hasan Minhaj in his cameo appearance),  brilliant adaptation (Christy Hall from the novel written by Colleen Hoover) and masterful direction by the lead actor Justin Baldoni, make this film one of the most important films of the recent times.

It Ends With Us (English/ 2024/ Prime Rental and Apple TV)

My favourite mainland Chinese movie is Crosscurrent by Yang Chao.

It is a story of the young sailor who travels from the Shanghai up to the sacred river Yangtze occasionally meeting women in port cities, who eventually turned out to be the same person (or not person at all but something from the Chinese mythology).

This film is a perfect blend of mysticism, realism and romance; it seems that the best way to describe it as magical realism. But there is unique Chinese qualities which distinguishes it from Latin-American magical realism. It is hard to define these qualities, but at first look one may say that it consists of much more blurring boundaries between reality and fantasy. I.e. these film truly believes in what it shows, thus as making these images alive.

Another great examples of Chinese mythical realism are: Kaili Blues (路邊野餐; 2015) by Bi Han, An Elephant Sitting Still (大象席地而坐; 2018) by Hu Bo, Widowed Witch (北方一片苍茫; 2017) by Cai Chengjie.

He is one of the most versatile actors from the Bengali film industry - an absolute favorite.

Champions (2023): This is 'Chak De India' of Hollywood that focuses on a disgraced coach who gets the impossible task of coaching the team of some 'special athletes'. The film smoothly transits from disgrace to victory, which is not completely a victory, yet is satisfactory. Bobby Farrelly scores a goal in his directorial debut with a terrific Woody Harrelson leading the pack of great actors. I wonder why it scores low on IMDB? 

His Three Daughters (2023): A Highly relatable and riveting film about an ailing father and his three daughters who are stuck between their past, their complicated relationship, and their responsibilities. Azazel Jacobs directorial boasts of grey and well-written characters who not only convince you but also make you having a part of theirs, resting inside your conscience.

HOLLYWOOD AT NETFLIX (Strongly Recommended)

Hayao Miyazaki isn’t just a filmmaker—he’s a mythmaker for a world desperately trying to forget its roots. In an era of corporate media pushing globalist homogenization, Miyazaki stands as a fierce advocate for tradition, community, and the irreplaceable connection between people and their land. His films aren’t just entertainment; they’re manifestos in ink and motion, screaming for a return to something real.  

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) – Nature as a Living Tradition

Before Studio Ghibli even had a name, Miyazaki laid his cards on the table with Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. This isn’t a black-and-white screed about environmentalism—it’s a battle between those who live in harmony with nature’s ancient rhythms and those who see it as something to be conquered and paved over. Nausicaä, a warrior-princess of the old ways, seeks balance, while the technocratic Tolmekians see only expansion and control. Sound familiar? That’s because it is—this is a story as old as civilization itself.  

Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986) – The Perils of Modernity

If there was ever a cinematic middle finger to globalist imperialism, Laputa: Castle in the Sky is it. A lost kingdom of immense technological power, now abandoned—why? Because power without tradition is a cancer. The film pits localist heroes—Pazu, a humble miner, and Sheeta, a lost princess—against Muska, a ruthless technocrat who sees Laputa’s floating fortress as a tool for domination. The message? The past holds wisdom modernity can’t comprehend, and those who forsake it for power will meet their downfall.  

Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989) – The Value of Community and Hard Work

In Kiki’s Delivery Service, a young witch must make it on her own, but not in some faceless metropolis—in a tight-knit, coastal town where people still help each other. Kiki doesn’t climb a corporate ladder or become a tech entrepreneur. She survives by offering an honest, traditional service: flying on her broom and making deliveries. There’s no magic shortcut, no corporate bailout—just sweat, struggle, and community support. The film isn’t just about growing up; it’s about finding one’s place in a real, grounded society.  

Porco Rosso (1992) – The Old World vs. The New World Order

A story of a cursed fighter pilot turned bounty hunter, Porco Rosso is dripping with nostalgia for a world lost to war and industry. The protagonist, a WWI ace, rejects both fascism and modernity, choosing instead to live as an independent outlaw—a lone defender of an era that’s slipping away. The Italian setting? Not just aesthetic—Miyazaki is showing us Europe before the modernist bulldozer flattened its culture. It’s a love letter to craftsmanship, heroism, and an old-world sense of honor that today’s bureaucrats and bankers would scoff at.  

Howl’s Moving Castle (2004) – Rootedness vs. Globalist War Machines

At first glance, Howl’s Moving Castle seems like a whimsical fantasy. But scratch the surface, and it’s Miyazaki at his most anti-modern. The war that looms over the film? Senseless, mechanized destruction orchestrated by faceless leaders who have no connection to the people they rule. Howl, the rebellious wizard, doesn’t fight for some abstract cause—he fights to protect those he loves, refusing to be a pawn in an imperialist machine. Meanwhile, Sophie, the protagonist, finds power not in rebellion, but in embracing tradition, responsibility, and love—things modernity tells us are outdated.  

The Wind Rises (2013) – The Tragedy of Progress

Miyazaki’s most autobiographical film is also his most tragic. The Wind Rises tells the story of Jiro Horikoshi, the engineer behind Japan’s WWII fighter planes. It’s not a war movie—it’s a meditation on the cost of progress. Jiro is a man of tradition, craftsmanship, and beauty, but his talents are inevitably used by the war machine. Miyazaki, ever the realist, doesn’t pretend tradition alone can stop the march of history—but he mourns what is lost in the process.  

The Verdict: Miyazaki as a Cinematic Ronin

Miyazaki isn’t a Luddite, nor is he a naive romantic. He sees the cracks in modernity and urges us to remember what came before. His films reject the hollow promises of technocracy, urbanization, and globalist monoculture. Instead, he champions the small, the local, the traditional—the village over the metropolis, the craftsman over the corporation, the rooted over the rootless.  

In an industry increasingly churning out soulless, mass-produced content, Miyazaki’s films stand as a last bastion of something older, something real. And that, dear viewer, is why he remains one of the last true auteurs in cinema.

Hayao Miyazaki: The Traditionalist-Localist Titan of Animation

21 years ago, when I was in 7th class at Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1, Sector 47, Chandigarh, I often used to read a message written in cursive handwriting on a fine cut blight-blue chart paper on a Notice Board, close to our Principal's cabin: 

"Electricity is a Good Servant, But is a Bad Master"

Now replace the word 'Electricity' in the above sentence with 'Internet', yet the impact remains the same. This is what the film 'CTRL' tells you about. 

Divided within different screen formats (mostly digital ones), this extremely engaging and important film of our times must be seen for its message, honesty and grit to show how 'bright' the technological future is. Vikramaditya Motwane, who struck gold last year with the web series 'Jubilee' on Prime, comes back with a banger film on Netflix which is intriguing and carries a very important message of how the internet and technology can be dangerous that owns your psyche completely and that's what's happening. It's all based on how you take control of it. Thankfully I am not following any influencer or any fool of that sort.

 Anyway, craft-wise, the screenplay and VFX are amazing. While the final moments do somewhat make you asking for more.   The compact cast is fantastic and Ananya Panday gives her career's best performance. After 'Gehrayiyaan', 'Kho Gaye Hain Hum Kahaan' and 'Call Me Bae', one must give to her for her efforts and the way she is putting her feet to seal her place as a reliable artist. She is the next USP of the film after the master maker Motwane. Give this a watch.
