What is it that keeps one from being a terrible person in life, and what is it that makes certain people seem awful?

Are we all so bad?

I've noticed a lot of the time when people (including myself) talk about disagreements they have with others,  they tend to only point out the faults in the other person, sometimes to exaggeration. I assume this behavior stems from the need to be vindicated as the victim.  I find it surprising that not many people look at the situation and ask what level of participation they had in developing this problem. Don't get me wrong there's absolutely people out there that will act toxic with no involvement from you. But I find the ability to step aside and look at things as objectively as you can,  and taking responsibility for your part in the issue, as well as communicating in a mature manner, can usually help repair most problems.
