OTD Edward VIII, later Prince Edward, Duke of Windsor, (Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David), King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Empire, and Emperor of India, from 20 January 1936 until his abdication on 11 December of that year. Edward was born during the reign of his great-grandmother Queen Victoria as the eldest child of the Duke and Duchess of York, later King George V and Queen Mary. He was created Prince of Wales on his sixteenth birthday, nine weeks after his father succeeded as king. As a young man, Edward served in the British Army during the First World War and undertook several overseas tours on behalf of his father. (Born: 1894), died on this day following a battle with Laryngeal cancer at Villa Windsor, Paris, France, aged 77.

OTD William Joyce (Pictured shortly after being captured), whose radio broadcasts to Britain during the war had earned him the nickname "Lord Haw-Haw", was captured by British troops in Flensburg, near the German border with Denmark, which was the last capital of the Third Reich. Spotting a dishevelled figure while they were resting from gathering firewood, intelligence soldiers including a Jewish German, Geoffrey Perry (born Horst Pinschewer), who had left Germany before the war engaged him in conversation in French and English, eventually recognising his voice. After they asked whether he was Joyce, he reached into his pocket (actually reaching for a false passport); believing he was armed, Perry shot him through the buttocks, resulting in four wounds. Joyce would end up being executed by hanging on January 3, 1946, aged 39.

1. It's not something celebrated by all Latinos/as/xs, since it's specifically related to Mexican history.

2. Heck, it's not something celebrated by Mexicans. At least, not as fervently as it is celebrated in the US. 

3. The main thing is that May 5th commemorates the Battle of the Mexican Army against the French that took place in Puebla, 1862. It's not Mexican Independence day.

So: not all Latinos/as/xs are Mexican, 5 de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day and it's part of a roster of festivities more popular in the US than in the countries they come from. 

Good? Good.

Posting a random photo/photos every day until I make a connection on here.

This is a B17 at the Museum of Aviation next to Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, Georgia.

My Dad believes this aircraft has the frame of the last operational B-17 (while it was still officially in service). In the late 50's, it was set to be decommissioned and used for scrap, but my Grandfather was able to step in and fly it from the boneyard in Arizona back to Grissom AFB (formerly Bunker Hill) in Indiana while he was stationed there. He served in WW 2  and had always wanted to fly the B-17s, but never had the privilege to fly one during his time in Europe. He was living out a dream with the last plane he could get his hands on!

It was transferred some years ago from Grissom to Robins AFB where they are now undergoing a full restoration of the aircraft to get it as close to the day it came off the assembly line. They have fitted it with restored engines from the Memphis Belle, making this an extremely unique aircraft and a cool piece of history!

He was one of the heroes who fought in the Trojan War. His story is similar to the story of Achilles. When he was a child, his mother held him by the groin and dipped him in the river Styx, as to make him invincible in battle. However, just like Achilles, he had a weak spot. Because his mother held him by the groin, this was where he became vulnerable. In the case of Achilles, this was his heel. So you may have heard of Achilles' heel, or the Achilles’ tendon, but I bet you have never heard of Bophades nuts.

May 21, 1941 

OTD World War II: German battleship Bismarck and cruiser Prinz Eugen stopped in Grimstadfjord, Norway to refuel Prinz Eugen. At 1315 hours, RAF Flying Officer Michael Suckling, flying a Spitfire fighter, spotted the warships. British Home Fleet commander Admiral John Tovey dispatched all available warships to prevent the Germans from breaking out to the North Atlantic. The German ships completed refueling at 1900 hours and began moving westwards. After dark, British bombers attacked the empty Grimstadfjord.

OTD World War II: Battleship Bismarck sighted British cruiser Suffolk on her portside at 1922 hours, then cruiser Norfolk at 2030 hours. Her main battery fired at Norfolk but did not score any hits. At 2200 hours, Bismarck reversed course to chase Suffolk, but Suffolk would be able to escape.
