#OTD World War II: British cruiser HMS York stopped the 3,359-ton German steamer Arucas (Pictured) 50 miles south of Iceland. Arucas' crew of 42 Arucas scuttled the ship. 3 died in the process. 39 men were picked up by HMS York. Arucas had sailed out of Vigo, Spain on 9 Feb in an attempt to break the Allied blockade.

The Most Underappreciated or Misunderstood Historical Event

The SS Potrero del Llano was a Mexican oil tanker that was sunk on May 13, 1942, by the German U-boat U-564, commanded by Reinhard Suhren, near Florida. The attack was one of two incidents (along with the sinking of the SS Faja de Oro) that led Mexico to declare war on the Axis Powers.

#OTD World War II: KNILM Douglas DC-3 shootdown: A Douglas DC-3 airliner was shot down over Australia by Japanese warplanes, resulting in the deaths of four passengers and the loss of diamonds worth an estimated A£ 150,000–300,000. The diamonds were presumably looted from the crash site but their fate remains a mystery. The PK-AFV Pelikaan was on a flight from Bandung, Dutch East Indies (later Indonesia), to Broome, Western Australia when it was attacked by Japanese aircraft that were carrying out an attack on Broome. PK-AFV crash-landed on a beach at Carnot Bay, 80 km (50 mi) north of Broome. The Pelikaan was initially registered as PH-ALP and had been operated by KLM since 25 August 1937. It was based in the Netherlands. On 10 May 1940, while the Pelikaan was en route to Asia, German forces invaded the Netherlands. PK-AFV was transferred to Royal Netherlands Indies Airways (KNILM) and re-registered as PK-AFV. The aircraft is sometimes incorrectly referred to as a C-47 Skytrain or Douglas Dakota, which were names given to the military variant of the DC-3.

#OTD Prince Amedeo, Duke of Aosta, third Duke of Aosta and a first cousin, once removed of the King of Italy, Victor Emmanuel III. During World War II, he was the Italian Viceroy of Italian East Africa (Africa Orientale Italiana, or AOI). Amedeo was born in Turin, Piedmont, to Prince Emanuele Filiberto, 2nd Duke of Aosta (son of Amadeo I of Spain and Princess Maria Vittoria), and Princess Hélène (daughter of Prince Philippe of Orléans and Princess Marie Isabelle of Orléans). As his patrilinal great-grandfather was King Victor Emmanuel II of Italy, he was a member of the House of Savoy. (Born: 1898), died on this day in a prisoner of war camp in Nairobi, Kenya as a result of complications from both tuberculosis and malaria, aged 43.

#OTD Winter War: Two days after the offered peace ultimatum expired, Soviet forces launched a major offensive against the Finns. A beachhead on the frozen Viipuri Bay west of the Viipuri city was reinforced, while the island of Uuras was captured. Finnish General Kurt Wallenius was dishonorably discharged for getting drunk during this key moment in the defense; Lieutenant General Lennart Oesch was appointed to succeed him.

This monument was built to commemorate the victims of the Sinar Bangun Motor Vessel sinking that occurred on June 18, 2018 and was inaugurated by the Regent of Simalungun on May 2, 2019 in Tiga Ras.

The sinking was caused by overloading and bad weather.
