#OTD World War II: Charlie Brown and Franz Stigler incident

After a successful bomb run on Bremen, 2nd Lt Charles "Charlie" Brown's B-17 Flying Fortress (named "Ye Olde Pub") was severely damaged by German fighters. Luftwaffe pilot Franz Stigler (Pictured, Right) had the opportunity to shoot down the crippled bomber but did not do so and instead escorted it over and past German-occupied territory so as to protect it. After an extensive search by Brown, the two pilots met each other 50 years later and developed a friendship that lasted until Stigler's death in March 2008. Brown died only a few months later, in November of the same year. After the war Stigler immigrated to Canada living in Vancouver, British Columbia.

#OTD Hans Langsdorff, German naval officer, most famous for his command of the German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee before and during the Battle of the River Plate off the coast of Uruguay in 1939. After the Panzerschiff (Deutschland-class cruiser) was unable to escape a pursuing squadron of Royal Navy ships, Langsdorff scuttled his ship. Three days later he died by suicide in his hotel room in Buenos Aires, Argentina. (Born: 1894), died on this day in Buenos Aires, Argentina, aged 45.

It was a night of 100,000 meteors. The Great Meteor Storm of 1833 was perhaps the most impressive meteor event in recent history. Best visible over eastern North America during the pre-dawn hours of November 13, many people, including a young Abraham Lincoln, were woken up to see the sky erupt in streaks and flashes. Hundreds of thousands of meteors blazed across the sky, seemingly pouring out of the constellation of the Lion (Leo).

This image is a digitization of a wood engraving which itself was based on a painting from a first-person account. We know today that the Great Meteor Storm of 1833 was caused by the Earth moving through a dense part of the dust trail expelled from Comet Tempel-Tuttle. The Earth moves through this dust stream every November during the Leonid meteor shower. Later this week you might get a slight taste of the intensity of that 1833 meteor storm by witnessing the annual Geminid meteor shower.

To the north of Moscow, Russia, Soviet tanks cut the road west of Klin; to prevent encirclement, the German 3rd Panzer Army abandoned Klin at 2130 hours and fled to the southwest, abandoning most of its heavy equipment. On the same day, Soviet state offices moved back to Moscow.

Colorful and bright, this streaking fireball meteor was captured in a single exposure taken at Purple Mountain (Tsuchinshan) Observatory’s Xuyi Station in 2020, during planet Earth's annual Perseid meteor shower. The dome in the foreground houses the China Near Earth Object Survey Telescope (CNEOST), the largest multi-purpose Schmidt telescope in China. Located in Xuyi County, Jiangsu Province, the station began its operation as an extension of China's Purple Mountain Observatory in 2006.

Darling of planet Earth's night skies in 2024, the bright comet designated Tsuchinshan-ATLAS (C/2023 A3) was discovered in images taken there on 2023 January 9. The discovery is jointly credited to NASA's ATLAS robotic survey telescope at Sutherland Observatory, South Africa. Other comet discoveries associated with the historic Purple Mountain Observatory and bearing the observatory's transliterated Mandarin name include periodic comets 60/P Tsuchinshan and 62/P Tsuchinshan.

August 6, 1991

This granite stone is one of the former tramway paving stones from Hiroshima, Japan, where on August 6, 1945, at 8:15 AM, an atomic bomb exploded.
These stones covered the crossroads where trams, the main public transport of Hiroshima’s residents, used to run.
This stone bore witness to the horrific nuclear explosion in one of the countries.
Hundreds of thousands of people perished in what became one of the greatest tragedies in history.

We wholeheartedly hope for the birth of a new and better world. To symbolize this, we created an image of a woman praying for eternal peace on 188 tramway stones near the Aioi Bridge, just a few hundred meters from the explosion’s epicenter.

Learning from the catastrophe that befell us and the guilt we all felt for the devastating consequences of World War II, we resolved never to use weapons against other nations under our noble laws.

We offer these commemorative stones to the peoples of the world in the hope that humanity, like us, desires a world of peace, free from conflict.
We preserve these witnesses of the Hiroshima nuclear explosion as a reminder of the importance of peace.

The Hiroshima Peace Stone is located in Tallinn, Estonia, in Kadriorg Park. It is near the Japanese Garden, symbolizing friendship and peace.

#OTD The ashes of Napoleon II were brought from Vienna to Paris, exactly one hundred years to the day since the retour des cendres when Napoleon Bonaparte's repatriated remains were interred at Les Invalides. The move was meant as a gesture of reconciliation on the part of AH, but a popular joke among the French went that the Parisians would have preferred coal to ashes.

Soekarno's exile house, located in the center of Parapat (Simalungun Regency), has been built since 1820 in European style. It is located on a hill area not far from Lake Toba and stands about 20-25 meters from the surface of the lake.The land area of this exile house has an area of 1,400 square meters with fir trees growing around the exile house, making it look cool and beautiful.

This exile house became the residence of Ir.Soekarno, Sutan Syahrir and Agus Salim during the military aggression. Initially, Soekarno was taken to the Berastagi area, but because the efforts of Selamat Ginting, the leader of the struggle in the Berastagi area, to free Soekarno and his colleagues were discovered, Soekarno and his two comrades-in-arms were moved to Parapat.

During his exile, Soekarno had a unique way of communicating with the fighters, namely by tucking letters in chicken thigh bones and kale stalks. The reason for tucking the letter was because communication was not free and under close observation.

Although European in style, the house is built on stilts and in 1980 it was opened as a tourist attraction and managed by the North Sumatra Provincial Government. Unfortunately when we went to the location, the house was closed and the gate was locked. In the end, we enjoyed the natural beauty around the exile house while capturing it through photos as you can see today.
