In 1987, Steven Rothstein bought a lifetime first-class ticket with American Airlines for $250,000, which allowed him to fly as often as he wanted. Rothstein made good use of the ticket, flying all over the world, including to places like Paris for breakfast, London for lunch, and New York for dinner. Over the years, he took more than 10,000 flights, costing the airline an estimated $21 million. However, in 2008, American Airlines decided to cancel his ticket.

This story began when American Airlines faced financial struggles in 1981. The airline couldn't borrow from banks because interest rates were too high. To solve this problem, a new executive came up with the idea to sell lifetime first-class tickets, named "AAirpass," for $250,000 each. This gave the airline an immediate cash influx.

One of these tickets even allowed the buyer to bring a friend for an additional $150,000, bringing the total cost to $400,000, which is about $1.2 million in today's money after adjusting for inflation.

While American Airlines expected customers to use the tickets for typical travel, they didn’t foresee some buyers, like Rothstein, flying so frequently. For these "super-travelers," the tickets were an incredible deal, giving them far more value than the airline anticipated.
