Karl Dane was a Danish actor who made a name for himself in Hollywood during the silent film era. Born Rasmus Karl Therkelsen Gottlieb in Copenhagen in 1886, he began his career performing in pantomimes in his home country. After serving in the military, he worked as a laborer and then a musician before pursuing his dream of acting. Dane moved to America in 1914 and joined a vaudeville troupe, where he honed his comedic skills. Dane's big break came when he was discovered by legendary silent film producer Hal Roach, who cast him in a series of comedy shorts alongside fellow Danish actor George K. Arthur. The duo became known as "The Two Danske" and quickly gained a following for their physical comedy and absurd antics. Dane's popularity skyrocketed, and he went on to star in several feature films, including "The Big Parade" and "The General." Despite his success, Dane's career was cut short when sound came to film in the late 1920s. His thick Danish accent made it difficult for him to find work in talking pictures, and he struggled to adapt to the new medium. Dane's personal life also began to suffer, and he turned to alcohol to cope with his frustrations. Tragically, he took his own life in April 1934, leaving behind a legacy as one of the greatest silent comedians of all time.
