After completing his education, Shevelove started his career as a writer for radio programs and later transitioned to writing for television. In the early 1950s, he worked on popular television shows such as "Your Show of Shows" and "Caesar's Hour." His comedic writing skills led to successful collaborations with notable performers of the time, including Sid Caesar, Mel Brooks, and Woody Allen. This exposure solidified his reputation as a talented comedy writer and opened doors for further opportunities in the industry.
However, it was Shevelove's partnership with composer Stephen Sondheim that would bring him widespread recognition. Their collaboration on the Broadway musical "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" in 1962 garnered critical acclaim and multiple Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical.
