Today In History, 6 May : Hindenburg Zeppelin Disaster.

It all began with the Zeppelin Hindenburg, piloted by Captain Max Pruss, carrying passengers from Germany to the United States. At first the Zeppelin Hindenburg wanted to make a landing in Boston, Massachusets but in the end it had to be postponed due to bad weather. Then Captain Max Pruss decided to take a tour of several places in the United States such as the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty and the Ebbets Field Baseball Stadium. After the tour, the Zeppelin Hindenburg decided to head to New Jersey. As the plane approached the landing site, Captain Pruss released some hydrogen gas. This lowered the ship so that the landing line was within range of the landing crew. Pruss circled the landing field tightly, lowering the Hindenburg closer to the ground. Suddenly, a bright flame appeared at the rear of the plane. Within seconds, the flame grew into a massive fire that engulfed the plane. The Hindenburg caught fire and crashed to the ground. The incident left 36 people dead, consisting of 13 passengers and 22 cabin crew members out of a total of 97 people. One person on the ground also died in this terrible incident. Based on the results of an investigation conducted by the United States, it was determined that static shocks ignited the hydrogen in the Hindenburg and caused the explosion. Due to this incident, Zeppelins began to be abandoned as one of the air vehicles.
