I think it's more confirmation bias; cognitive dissonance is merely a mechanism in higher intelligences (apes, cetaceans, border collies, etc) to allow the brain (mind) to hold opposing and seemingly contradictory ideas as real & valid without weighting either as preferable or more likely than the other. Or, to quote Blackadder concerning the willing suspension of disbelief, "no one's staring in disbelief at MY willy suspension!" Look at the 1933 Hitler playbook... different Trump, same Fart!
