Lee Strasberg

Lee Strasberg Bio

Lee Strasberg was a legendary theatre practitioner and acting coach from the United States. Born on November 17th, 1901, in what is now Ukraine, Strasberg's family migrated to New York City when he was a child. Strasberg was fascinated by the theatre and enrolled in the drama program at the Ethical Culture School in Manhattan. He went on to join the Theatre Guild, a prestigious organization that produced some of the most significant plays of the 20th century. Strasberg started his career as an actor and appeared in several off-Broadway plays in the 1920s and 1930s. He acted in influential productions such as ‘The Emperor Jones’ by Eugene O'Neill and ‘Gods of the Lightning’ by Preston Sturges. Strasberg's real contribution to theatre, however, came in the form of his teaching and direction. In the 1940s, he formed the Group Theatre with Harold Clurman and Cheryl Crawford, which dedicated itself to creating socially relevant plays that challenged the status quo. Strasberg's greatest contribution to theatre was developing the 'Method,' a form of acting that emphasized the use of emotional memory to produce a realistic portrayal of a character. He first came across this technique while studying with the Russian actor and director Konstantin Stanislavski in the 1930s. Strasberg expanded upon the method, adding emotional memory exercises and improvisation techniques. His teachings influenced some of the most prominent actors of the 20th century, including Marlon Brando, James Dean, and Robert De Niro. Strasberg's legacy extended beyond his lifetime. His teachings and techniques continue to influence actors all over the world, and his approach to acting has become a standard part of acting pedagogy. Strasberg died on February 17th, 1982, but his legacy continues through the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, which he founded in 1969. The institute, which has locations in New York and Los Angeles, remains one of the most respected drama schools in the world.
