"I am a Canadian, free to speak without fear, free to worship in my own way, free to stand for what I think is right, free to oppose what I believe is wrong, free to choose those who shall govern my country. This heritage of freedom I pledge to uphold for myself and all mankind."

Robert Baldwin

Robert Baldwin Bio

Robert Baldwin was a prominent Canadian politician in the 19th century who played a pivotal role in restructuring the political landscape of his country. Baldwin was born on May 12, 1804, in York (now Toronto), Canada, and was the son of William Warren Baldwin, a well-known lawyer and politician. Baldwin inherited his father's passion for politics and went on to lead a long and fruitful career in public service.

Baldwin's political career began in 1829 when he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada. He quickly established himself as a rising star in the colonial administration, advocating for constitutional reform and greater democratic participation. In 1836, Baldwin formed an alliance with Louis-Hippolyte LaFontaine, a French-Canadian politician from Lower Canada, to create the first truly representative government in Canadian history.

Together, Baldwin and LaFontaine fought for responsible government, which meant that elected officials, rather than colonial administrators or imperial officials, were held accountable to the people. This alliance proved to be instrumental in the passage of the Rebellion Losses Bill, which compensated those who had suffered property damage during the 1837-38 Rebellions in Upper and Lower Canada. The passage of the bill was highly controversial, and it led to Baldwin and LaFontaine's eventual resignation from office in 1843.

Despite this setback, Baldwin remained an active participant in Canadian politics and continued to advocate for greater democratic rights and freedoms. He played a key role in negotiating the union between Upper and Lower Canada, which led to the creation of the Province of Canada in 1841. Baldwin served as the first Prime Minister of the Province of Canada in 1848, and his legacy continues to be felt in Canadian politics to this day.
