The earliest reference to Demas in the New Testament is found in the epistle to Philemon. Here Demas is described simply as a “fellow laborer” of Paul, along with other prominent Christians such as Epaphras and Luke. From this brief introduction, it is clear that Demas had some kind of important role in the early Christian community, although the exact nature of his work is unclear. In the second mention of Demas in the New Testament, Paul identifies him as a “fellow worker” and sends his greetings to him and the other believers. This reference is found in Colossians 4:14, where Paul acknowledges the contributions of several individuals who have worked alongside him in spreading the gospel. Demas is mentioned along with Luke, Mark, and others, indicating that he was perhaps part of Paul’s inner circle. The final reference to Demas in the Bible is found in Paul’s second letter to Timothy. In this letter, Paul mentions Demas in passing along with several others, but this time his tone is different. He writes, “Demas, because he loved this world, has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica” (2 Timothy 4:10). This is the final mention of Demas in the Bible, and it has led to much discussion and speculation over the centuries about what might have caused Demas to turn away from the faith.
