Albert Bassermann was a German stage and screen actor who excelled in both dramatic and comedic roles. He was born on September 7, 1867, in Mannheim, Germany. Bassermann grew up in a family of actors, and he began his career performing in regional theaters throughout Germany. He made his stage debut in 1887, and he quickly established himself as one of Germany’s most promising young actors.
In 1904, Bassermann made his first appearance in a silent film, and he continued to work in cinema throughout his career. He is best known for his performance in the 1934 film “The Red House,” for which he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Bassermann also appeared in numerous German-language films, including a number of Fritz Lang productions.
Despite his success in film, Bassermann remained loyal to the stage throughout his career. He was particularly acclaimed for his performances in the plays of Shakespeare, Ibsen, and Chekhov. In 1929, he founded the Deutsches Theater in Berlin, which became one of the leading theaters in Germany under his direction. Throughout his career, Bassermann was widely respected as one of the finest actors of his generation, and he was the recipient of numerous awards and honors. He died in Zurich on May 15, 1952, at the age of 84.
