Gyula Zilahy is a prominent Hungarian author, journalist, and translator. Born on 14 December 1909 in Szeged, Hungary, he received his degree in law from the University of Szeged. From 1932 to 1937, he worked as a journalist for various newspapers, including “Magyar Kurir” and “Budapesti Hirlap.” During this time, he also gained fame as a writer and published several books, including his famous novel, “The Last Night of a Doll's Life.” During World War II, Zilahy worked for the underground resistance movement against the Nazi occupation of Hungary. He escaped arrest and fled to Italy in 1944. From here, he worked as a translator for the British military and continued his writing, publishing several books about his experiences of the war. These included “A Bolt Rossz Célra Jár,” which was later translated into English as “Hungarian Rhapsody.” After the war, Zilahy returned to Hungary and became an active member of the Hungarian Writers' Union. In 1954, he was a founding member of the Petofi Circle, a group of Hungarian writers, poets, and intellectuals who challenged the state socialist regime. He was a vocal critic of the government and its suppression of artistic and literary expression. Despite the censorship, he continued to write and publish books until his death in 1974. Today, Gyula Zilahy is considered one of the most important and influential Hungarian writers of the 20th century. His work has been translated into several languages, including English, French, and German, and he has received numerous awards for his contributions to literature and journalism.
