Stein was a Soviet Grandmaster, considered to be one of the most prodigious players of his time. Known for his aggressive style of play, Stein had a remarkable tactical and positional understanding of the game. Stein's chess career began when he was just 10 years old, and he quickly rose up the ranks in the Soviet Union. He won the Ukrainian championship twice, in 1957 and 1958, and became an international master in 1960 after winning the Moscow Championship. Stein earned the title of Grandmaster in 1962 after his impressive performance in the Candidates Tournament. In the late 1960s, Stein became one of the top players in the world, winning several prestigious tournaments and achieving outstanding results in the USSR Chess Championship. He was known for his incredible performances against chess legends, including Bobby Fischer, Tigran Petrosian, and Boris Spassky.
