Marcelo Ríos

Marcelo Ríos Bio

Marcelo Ríos is a retired Chilean tennis player who is widely acknowledged as the most successful tennis player from his country. He was born on December 26, 1975, in Santiago, Chile, and started playing tennis at the age of six. Ríos began playing professionally at the age of 14 and had a promising start to his career, winning his first ATP tour title in 1995. Ríos reached his career-high ranking of World No. 1 in 1998, and is considered the first Latin American player to achieve this feat. He ended the year as the first South American to finish as the world No. 1, earning him the title of the "King of South American Tennis." Ríos held the top spot for a total of six weeks and was the first player to achieve this while not winning a Grand Slam title. Throughout his career, Ríos won a total of 18 ATP tour singles titles, including the 1998 Miami Open and the 1998 Hamburg Masters. He was also a finalist at the 1998 Australian Open, where he lost to Petr Korda, and the 1999 Grand Slam Cup, where he lost to Andre Agassi. Ríos is known for his unique style of play, which includes an unconventional two-handed backhand and his ability to win matches from seemingly unwinnable positions. In addition to his individual success, Ríos was also a successful player in doubles, reaching the quarterfinals of the 1995 US Open and the 1996 Australian Open with partner Jaime Oncins. Despite his many accomplishments, Ríos was plagued by injuries, which significantly impacted the latter part of his career. He officially retired from professional tennis in 2004 and was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2018.
