Born on December 23, 1920, in Gävle, a city located in central Sweden, Malmsten began acting in his teenage years. He went on to become one of the most beloved actors in Sweden, appearing in over 80 films and television shows throughout his career. Malmsten's breakout role came in the 1943 film "Hets," where he played a troubled student who falls in love with his teacher. The film was a critical and commercial success and launched Malmsten's career. He went on to work with some of the greatest filmmakers in Swedish cinema, including Ingmar Bergman, who directed him in the 1949 film "Thirst." Malmsten's popularity extended beyond the borders of Sweden, with his films being screened at international festivals and gaining recognition around the world. He was known for his intense and emotional performances, which earned him the nickname "the Swedish James Dean." Malmsten won several awards throughout his career, including the Guldbagge Award for Best Actor in 1969 for his performance in "Under the Sign of the Scorpio." Sadly, Malmsten's life was cut short when he passed away on February 3, 1991, at the age of 70. However, his legacy as a talented and influential actor lives on, and he remains one of Sweden's most celebrated cultural icons.
